Creek Walking
An entertaining activity that I enjoy is creek walking. I did this as a kid, but had forgot how much fun this can be. What led me to the creeks again was arrowheads. A year ago I moved back to the area where I grew up. About the same time, I found several Indian artifact discussion boards on the net that fascinated me. People were finding all kinds of neat stuff in creeks. It was summer in Alabama at the time and Alabama creeks are infested with snakes, including water moccasins which can be pretty nasty if they feel threatened. So I patiently waited on winter when the snakes weren't likely to be around. The nights eventually got cold and the snakes tucked themselves away for the winter, so I bought me a pair of hip waders for the creek. I soon found out that finding arrowheads in creeks is a lot harder than finding them on dry land. It takes a special skill that I am still learning. But what fun I am having while I'm learning. I find huge turtle shells, beaver dams that create pretty ponds, strange trees that are bent and twisted, high bluffs that cause the creek to twist and turn, forests of cane that will make good fishing poles, marshes with pretty cattails. I even found a freshly killed deer that didn't cross the creek fast enough to lose its predator. There's all kind of neat stuff in the creeks and the more isolated the creek, the more neat stuff you can find. This creek that I walk is tucked way back in the woods - farther than most will walk nowadays. In fact, the only people I ever see at the creek are people on ATV's whizzing by, only stopping long enough to make sure the creek isn't too deep to cross. They don't know what they are missing and I'm glad they don't. Less people in my creek, the better.
