Old Jonesboro, Alabama

By Bill Coleman

Old Jonesboro was founded by Henry F. DeBardeleben in 1887 at a bend of Valley Creek. The town was first named Mound State Camp Ground because of the three Mississipean Indian culture mounds that were located within the town limits. Jonesboro was first spelled Jonesborough. It is now within the city limits of Bessemer, Alabama, but the town itself no longer exists. The main landamark in Old Jonesboro was a small hotel.
