The House That Kirk Douglas Built
By Bill Coleman
Last night my wife and I saw a pretty good movie on Turner Classics - Strangers When We Meet. Architect Larry Cole (Kirk Douglas) has a beautiful, loving wife (Barbara Rush), but he falls head-over-heels for his new neighbor Maggie (Kim Novak.) Cole isn't a garden variety architect. He's an artiste. He doesn't agree to design novelist Roger Alter's (Ernie Kovacs) home until he reads Roger's books so that he can get some insight into Roger's mind. Cole is not blown away by Roger's books, but figures that deep down Roger is a kindred spirit who will be willing to fund Cole's vision. So he begins construction on the cliff top Bel Air home. I mean construction REALLY begins on the home. Architect Carl Anderson and art director Ross Bellah were hired to actually build the home in stages so that the audience can more fully connect with Larry's vision. The publicists at Columbia Pictures told the media that the studio would sell the home after the movie's completion. However, the rumor mill buzz was that the movie's director, Richard Quine, planned to move into the home with Kim Novak. The two had been romantically involved for years, but never spoke of it publicly until midway through the movie's production. I don't know know how much longer their affair lasted, but Kovak and Quine didn't move into the house. It was sold when the movie was completed. It still stands today - 48 years later. A house like that in Bel Air would sell for millions today. The construction price mentioned in the movie was $100,000. It was pretty interesting watching the house being built, all the way from Kim holding the end of the tape measure for Kirk on an empty lot, to Kirk turning over the keys to Ernie.
